The Otago Daily Times story on Dr Edwards

Edwards might have to choose between roles

Wellington: Broadcaster Brian Edwards might have to choose between National Radio's high-rating Top O' the Morning show and an advisory role in the new government.

Radio New Zealand chief executive Sharon Crosbie said yesterday she expected to hear Dr Edwards' intentions when they discussed his annual contract, which expires at the end of the month.

She realised Dr Edwards' three-hour Saturday show represented only a small segment of his life.

He had always been clear Labour leader Helen Clark was one of the clients of his media advisory business, and she had no difficulties with that.

However in view of the importance of political independence, this would have to be re-evaluated now.

Dr Edwards and his partner Judy Callingham, have provided media advice to Ms Clark for four years.

He was unavailable for comment but is understood to have met the Prime Minister-designate to discuss a role in the government.

A spokesman for Ms Clark said she had made no decisions about new appointments.
